Origins of the IPA

The story of the IPA begins in the late 18th century, during the British colonial era. As British soldiers and traders travelled to India, they needed a beer that could withstand the long sea voyage from England. Traditional ales were often spoiled by the time they reached the shores of India due to the hot climate and lengthy journey.

As a result, a pale ale with a higher alcohol content and increased hop levels (two natural preservatives) was crafted. This became known as “India Pale Ale” and was an instant hit for its ability to retain its freshness and flavour even after months at sea. A new alcoholic beverage was also necessitated by the casualties caused from drinking arak, a ferment palm sap based drink. The soldiers needed a drink that was strong like arak (to keep them carrying on drinking it), hence the high ABV of IPAs, and one that was flavourful, hence the distinctive hoppy taste. IPAs were the perfect solution to their conundrums, and by the early 19th century, IPAs had become a staple of British beer culture, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The American IPA Revolution

Fast forward to the late 20th century, and IPAs experienced a renaissance, particularly in the United States. Craft brewers embraced the style and took it to new heights, experimenting with bold flavours, diverse hop varieties, and innovative brewing techniques. This creativity gave birth to a wide array of IPA styles, each with its own unique character.

American IPAs are known for their intense hop aromas, citrusy and piney flavours, and balanced bitterness. These bold and flavourful beers quickly captured the hearts of beer enthusiasts, propelling IPAs to the forefront of the craft beer movement, cementing it as one of the most popular styles of beer in recent years.

IPAs today

Today, IPAs come in many varieties, each providing a different tasting experience. Let’s explore a few of the more popular variations below.

Traditional English IPA

The classic English IPA, with its balanced malt and hop profile, showcases earthy and floral hop flavours with a comparatively moderate bitterness. It retains the traditional profile of an IPA while offering a smoother drinking experience.

American IPA

Renowned for their hoppier character, American IPAs boast vibrant citrus and pine flavours. This style often features a golden to amber hue and is more bitter than other styles.

New England IPA (Hazy IPA)

The New England IPA, or Hazy IPA, has gained immense popularity for its juicy and hazy appearance. Characterised by its low bitterness, this style highlights tropical fruit and citrus notes, making it a refreshing and aromatic delight.

Double IPA (Imperial IPA)

For those seeking an extra punch, the Double IPA delivers. With elevated alcohol content and amplified hop flavours, this style offers an intriguing blend of malt sweetness and hop intensity, providing a bold and unforgettable experience.

Session IPA

Session IPAs contain all the hop goodness of their counterparts, but with lower alcohol content. This makes them perfect for a leisurely afternoon of sipping without sacrificing flavour or aroma.

Black IPA

Black IPAs are a fusion of rich roasted malt flavours and hop bitterness. With their dark appearance and unique taste profile, these beers are a testament to the versatility of the IPA style.
